Governance Matters assists nonprofits of all missions and sizes to achieve the highest standards of board leadership, governance and oversight. Core services are online and customized board recruitment and placement, governance training (including e-learning), and expert consultation. Our free online board recruitment and matching programs, charitySTRONG.org and boardnetUSA.org, offer nonprofits unparalleled access to a diverse pool of thousands of board-seeking candidates. As an affiliate of the New York Council of Nonprofits, we also provide nonprofits with “one-stop” access to a complete range of capacity-building services, including legal services, financial management, fiscal sponsorship, strategic planning, D&O/liability insurance, and employee benefits.
Governance Matters, supported by the New York Community Trust and Altman Foundation, is embarking on a program to provide its board governance services to 20 eligible nonprofit organizations. These organizations will receive our recruitment and placement services, supported by wrap-around supportive board-building consulting and training services. (For a description of these services, click here.) A continuum of Governance Matters’ technical assistance resources will provide direct and impactful services that are customized to the particular needs of each nonprofit. The goal is to strengthen the governance of the awardee nonprofits by educating them on roles and responsibilities, preparing them for board recruitment, finding and placing critically important new board members, and ensuring that these new individuals are positioned to have agency and impact from the beginning of their service.
Governance Matters has committed to measure the impact of its work on board culture, board effectiveness and systems. In submitting a response to this RFP, you acknowledge:
- Your board members are fully supportive of your organization’s participation in this program,
- Your board members and staff will take a preliminary survey, and that your organization will provide baseline information about your programs and challenges, and
- You will report on the program’s impact on your organization when requested. We envision that these reports will be required twice a year for three years.
This opportunity is open to any 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in New York City. Sixteen of the awardees must be grantees of New York Community Trust. Applications are welcome from organizations of all budget sizes, emerging or well-established organizations, and any type of operating 501(c)3 nonprofit, regardless of its mission.
Governance Matters awardees are selected through a competitive application process. Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements and be committed to enthusiastically engaging in this process.
Applications are due on Monday, March 2nd, with finalist interviews taking place the week of March 9th, 2020. Projects will be scheduled starting in late March.
