On August 21st, Governance Matters hosted fifteen prospective board candidates at our midtown offices for a free workshop entitled “Serving on a Nonprofit Board: A Primer.” Doug Sauer, Executive Director of Governance Matters, presented a Board Training workshop in which he walked interested professionals through the steps of what it means to serve on the Board of Directors of a nonprofit organization. Board service is rewarding for many reasons. Certainly the appeal of giving your time, talent and treasure to a nonprofit or community you care about has its own intrinsic reward. In addition to that, board members can expect professional growth, networking opportunities and perhaps even a certain level of recognition in the community. Board service also carries with it a significant level of responsibility, of course. It is not a job that one should enter into without some education about what those responsibilities are. If you missed the training, be on the lookout for a recurring monthly series of this exact topic!
