Relationship Will Provide Enhanced Board Matching and Consulting Services to Nonprofits
ALBANY, New York – May 1, 2015. The Boards of Directors of the New York Council of Nonprofits, Inc. (NYCON) and the Volunteer Consulting Group, Inc. (VCG) has voted to affiliate effective May 1, 2015, with VCG becoming a subsidiary of NYCON. VCG has been an innovator in the field of nonprofit governance services in Metro NYC since 1969 and developed and operates boardnetUSA (www.boardnetUSA.org), a unique online board matching website. Included in the affiliation is Governance Matters, Inc. (GM), a subsidiary of VCG that promotes best practices in governance.
“This acquisition deepens NYCON’s footprint in the New York City area and adds the vital services of board recruitment and matching services to our portfolio,” states Doug Sauer, NYCON’s Chief Executive Officer. “Moving forward, we are looking to replicate VCG’s services first in the Hudson Valley and Capital Regions, and then to other upstate regions. We will also be upgrading boardnetUSA to further revolutionize the way boards and new leaders find each other,” he further notes.
“Our board is excited about the new relationship with NYCON. It takes our work on board development state-wide, roots us in a wider vision of capacity building, and serves as an outstanding example of finding synergies through merger in a sector that increasingly prizes both efficiency and quality of service,” says David Birdsell, Chair of the VCG Board of Directors and Dean of the Baruch College School of Public Affairs. Lynn Videka, NYCON’s Board Chair and Dean of New York University Silver School of Social Work agrees, noting that “our two boards and executive teams have worked diligently since last summer to develop a model to integrate our organizations in a way which best serves the missions and needs of our nonprofit constituencies.”
NYCON’s corporate family includes Innovative Charitable Initiatives, Inc., a nonprofit providing employment administration and fiscal sponsorship services, and Council Services Plus, Inc., a full service insurance brokerage social enterprise exclusively serving nonprofits.
The affiliation process was supported in part by a grant from the New York Merger, Acquisition and Collaboration Fund.
