The New York Council of Nonprofits (NYCON) and Governance Matters are launching a monthly training series titled “Practical Solutions for Today’s Nonprofit Governance Challenges.” These trainings cover a wide range of topics such as defining the expectations of board service, building leadership, improving fundraising strategies and developing the relationship between board and staff leaders. Both board members and staff are encouraged to attend.
Space is limited to provide a customized experience and meaningful interactions between participants. Below is a description of each workshop and a link to register. The trainings will be led by NYCON and Governance Matters’ professional staff and are open to the public but offered at a discount to NYCON members.
Duties and Responsibilities of a Nonprofit Board of Directors
This session provides an overview of the legal, fiduciary, and ethical responsibilities of the Board of Directors. It will address the key roles a board is expected to take on, provide an overview of best practices, and offer practical guidance for board members to individually and collectively achieve excellence in governance performance. The session is designed for current and prospective Board Members and Executive Directors/CEOs.

Developing a Fiscally Accountable Nonprofit Board
This session will emphasize how a board can efficiently organize itself to make sound fiscal decisions and maintain accountability to donors, funding sources, constituencies and regulating bodies. The session will define the board’s fiduciary responsibilities; the role of the board, committees and staff in financial oversight; key elements of a financial report; budget development strategies and the importance of creating and maintaining an effective investment policy.
