About the Brooke W. Mahoney Award: The Brooke Award recognizes an organization’s Board of Directors for Outstanding Board Leadership as it dedicates time and resources to achieving the organization’s unique mission. The Award was established under Volunteer Consulting Group, now Governance Matters, Inc., in 2010 to honor the memory of Brooke W. Mahoney. For thirty-eight years, Brooke served as our Executive Director and Innovator-in-Chief. Long before “good governance” became a discussion topic for the nonprofit sector, Brooke set out to bring diverse, strong individuals into nonprofit board rooms with the goal of creating a “brain trust” to help organizations achieve their mission.
Join us on April 6th, 2017 at Proskauer Rose, LLP to celebrate the winner of the Brooke W. Mahoney Award. We are honored to announce the following organizations as award finalists! (in alphabetical order)
America Needs You fights for economic mobility for ambitious, first-generation college students. They do this by providing transformative mentorship and intensive career development. Since 2009, ANY has been improving college completion and employment rates for first-generation college students. The agency was founded on the belief that socio-economic status should not be a barrier to college persistence and career success.
Why America Needs You (ANY) Stands Out: ANY describes good governance as the “ability to make informed choices to set a strategic direction for the organization.” Their board members focus on strategic finances and fundraising, but are also involved in, and supportive of, program experiences and community relationships.
BCA Global connects culinary and food professionals with career opportunities and provides the resources needed to advance the young diverse talent in the industry. BCAGlobal serves as a link between the food service and a young diverse audience seeking career opportunities. The value to the industry is in the investment in young culinary professionals who aspire to advance, network and develop their leadership abilities.
Why BCA Global Stands Out: BCA Global describes itself as a grassroots organization that requires board members often participate in “all hands on deck” situations. Board members bring professional skills, a commitment to being strong ambassadors for the organization, and a commitment to understanding the environment in which the organization operates.
The HOPE Program empowers New Yorkers living in poverty to achieve economic self-sufficiency through employment and advancement. Hope has an evidence-based and employer-driven approach to training, job placement and career advancement, to respond to the changing needs of their students, graduates and community.
Why The Hope Program Stands Out: The Hope Program describes its Board of Directors as being focused on the strategy, innovation, and active participation that has enabled the organization to grow and expand its mission impact and organizational sustainability. The board provides leadership in resource development and members share their skills, networks, and time generously in their oversight functions as well as programmatic engagement.
