Governance Matters and NYCON Receive Grants to Serve NYC Nonprofits

The Altman Foundation and The New York Community Trust Invest in Staff, Program Development and Educational Workshops

New York City, March 22nd, 2016 – NYCON is pleased to announced grant awards from the Altman Foundation and The New York Community Trust that will strengthen the continuum of services provided to New York city nonprofits by our family of companies, including new subsidiary, Governance Matters, and long-time insurance subsidiary, Council Services Plus.

The Altman Foundation awarded a $75,000 grant for Governance Matters in order to support staff, based in mid-town Manhattan, new programming and additional services offered via partnership with NYCON.  “The Governance Matters Board of Directors and NYCON are thrilled at the opportunities that the Altman Foundation’s capacity-building investment will provide as we advance thought and practice leadership in board governance throughout our great state,” said Doug Sauer, CEO of NYCON.

The New York Community Trust (NYCT) awarded $12,000 to Governance Matters to develop two educational sessions on how nonprofit organizations can make informed choices in the complex, and costly, world of health insurance. These sessions will be presented in collaboration with Council Services Plus.  The first session will be exclusively for invited grantees located in NYC, Long Island and Westchester County and will be held in May.  The second session, a Governance Matters Roundtable, will be open to the public at a later date.

“We see small nonprofits struggle daily with how to best navigate the confusing and ever-changing world of health insurance options,” said Peter Andrew, CEO of Council Services Plus, and the expert presenter for both educational workshops.  “There is a tremendous need in our community for practical knowledge and tools that can ensure that the nonprofit work force has access to affordable health care. These creative sessions aim to empower nonprofits to make smart choices.”
