On Tuesday September 26th, Governance Matters’ Brooke W. Mahoney Award for Outstanding Board Leadership winner The HOPE Program, and finalists BCA Global and America Needs You, participated in a lively panel discussion about what makes their Boards–and their organizations–successful. The panel was moderated by David Birdsell, Marxe Dean of the Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs at Baruch College, and Chair of Governance Matters. We were honored to have both the Executive Directors and Board Chairs joining us in two out of three of our spotlighted organizations. Aditya Sanghvi, Board Chair of America Needs You talked about the importance of term limits for board members, saying “term limits are a good opportunity for the board to restate it’s commitment to the organization.” Jennifer Mitchell, Executive Director of The HOPE Program said that nonprofit staff should feel free to work with their boards, she said “nonprofits often feel they need to put on a show for their board.” Alex Askew, Executive Director of BCA Global discussed give-get policies and spotlighted the importance of flexibility as many of his board members provide in-kind donations rather than monetary ones. The event was a huge success and we are very grateful to Baruch College for hosting us.
